The March

Working closely with Time, we designed a modular, traveling exhibition experience for The March, a groundbreaking immersive VR experience of the 1963 March on Washington, with it’s inaugural launch event at the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center in Chicago.

Experience The March on Washington — Today

Revisiting the March on Washington is a powerful experience — the exhibition design was based on the idea of slowly removing visitors’ sensory stimulus in order to transport them back in time for a sensory-heightened experience in VR. Afterwards, slowly returning their senses into the present through chronologically sequential elements from past to present.

Experience

A darkened and quiet space invites visitors to pause and center themselves prior to the main experience.

1.

An oral history sound bath contains voices of fist hand accounts, with key quotes animated and fading.

2.

Lights show where participants stand, as docents facilitate the main VR experience. Inside the VR experience, participants can see Dr. King’s speech up close and personal.

3.

Post-VR, visitors can take a moment to reorient themselves to the present and watch documentary footage of the actual March on Washington.

4.

An installation of historical posters are paired with documentary footage of contemporary civil rights movements, with recreation historical posters for guests to take with them.

5.

Upon exiting, an enlarged button from the 1963 March on Washington along with text prompts encourages continued activism for civil rights.
